Even more concerning is the rampant "greenwashing" in the industry: many brands use the word "silk" to describe garments that are, in fact, made from polyester satin. They mislead you terribly. Always check the composition label. A product titled "Silk Dress" might be 100% polyester on the tag. This happens with wool and other fabrics as well. If a product just says "silk" without specifying percentages, it may be a blend where silk accounts for as little as 5–10%, with the rest being synthetic. The Discovery
It all started with a vintage find. I remember holding a piece of clothing that felt nothing like the high-gloss, fragile silk I was used to. It had a weight, a texture, and a soul. I looked at the label: 100% Silk. I was stunned. It felt incredible, yet it lacked the "precious," somewhat stiff nobility of conventional silk. It was raw, organic, and honest.
The white cape in the picture below is the first raw piece of clothing I laid my hands and eyes on, and it became my primary inspiration. I am a Scorpio; I love secrets and mysteries. I feel great when I raise curiosity and intrigue around me. I love triggering those unspoken questions: Why does this raw silk look so good, even if it looks slubby? What could this never-seen-before fabric be? It’s a texture you don't see in every generic Instagram feed. The other pictures depict other raw silk vintage pieces I curated for my Etsy shop.
That discovery sparked a long-term obsession. Finding that we have a local producer who weaves this magnificent raw silk (silk noil) was a turning point. For several years now, we at FineThee have been working for our raw silk clothing permanent collection with this material, available in two weights: a lighter 15 momme for fluidity, sheerness, and incredible lightness, and a sturdier 22 momme for structure.
Our Sourcing Philosophy
At FineThee, we are deeply committed to circularity. We source our fabrics from two distinct places: deadstock fabrics—leftover batches of precious materials from high-end Italian designers—and locally woven textiles.
The raw silk for our permanent collection is sourced locally, ensuring a low carbon footprint and supporting local craftsmanship. Very rarely—it has only happened twice so far—we find similar raw fabrics as deadstock from Italian designers. We recently sold out of a spectacular, heavier raw silk sourced in this way, proving that beauty often lies in these rare, recovered treasures.

Unlike conventional silk produced through industrial processes, raw silk retains the sericin—the natural protein produced by silkworms. This detail gives it its unmistakable characteristics:

A Practical Guide to Caring for Raw Silk
Because we work with it so closely, I often get asked: “Is it hard to wash raw silk at home?” While raw silk can be dry-cleaned, I personally love the ritual of hand-washing it. If you’re planning to wash your pieces at home, here is what you need to know:
- Size Up: This is the most important rule. Because raw silk is a natural, unrefined fiber, it will shrink by about 8-10% upon the first wash. Always choose your size accordingly!
- The Gentle Touch: Use a detergent that is specifically formulated for delicate fibers. It must be free from harsh chemicals—and under no circumstances, use bleach.
- Softness is Key: You can use a gentle fabric softener, but ensure it is mild and pH-neutral to preserve the integrity of the natural silk proteins.
- The Technique: Be gentle. Do not wring the fabric. After washing, press the water out using a towel and lay it flat to dry.
